Cornish cheeses are a cut above at world awards

Cornwall was at the forefront of celebrations at the World Cheese Awards with some little and large winners from among the 2,785 cheeses being tested.

A tiny Cornish business, made up of mother and son cheesemakers, was pronounced as Super Gold, Silver and Bronze winners. Whalesborough Farm Foods of Marhamchurch, near Bude, has been operating for 12 years and has gained a major following for its cheese.
However the World Cheese Award accolades: Super Gold for their Keltic Gold, Silver for their Trelawny and Bronze for their Cornish Crumbly, reaffirms the companys position as a top quality cheesemaker.
Sue Proudfoot, mother and founder of Whaslesborough, says: The World Cheese Awards creates a wonderful platform for a small cheesemaking business like us.
Globally respected accolades like these mean that we are stepping onto the world stage in front of a critical and informed audience who understand just how important quality and provenance are.
We do remain staunchly loyal to our customers, who are the ultimate judges of the success of any cheese, but events like the World Cheese Awards excite and inform us - and these accolades are proof that we are definitely on the right track in every way.
The small business, whose cheeses grace the shelves of top London shops, including Fortnum and Mason as well as the local farm shops and cheeseboards in Cornwalls fantastic gastronomic establishments, has always stayed true to its key principle of listening to the customer.
As a result the operation has created a varied range of cheeses, all produced from the top quality milk from Cornwalls respected Trewithen Dairy.
Meanwhile, Davidstow Cornish Cheddar has firmly established its credibility as the best in cheddar after winning gold across many categories at the prestigious World Cheese Awards 2012.
Established for over 60 years, the Cornish cheese-maker collected an impressive 11 awards out of 11 exhibits.
