The Scarlet Hotel in Cornwall plays host to the world's best afternoon tea with a view

Alexandra Hurley discovers afternoon delight with acreamtea on the edge of the ocean

Luxury eco hotel the Scarlet Hotel, Mawgan Porth in Cornwall describes itself as being on the edge of the ocean’ and there isn’t a more accurate way to describe this hotel’s breathtaking location. With an abundance of floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the Scarlet Restaurant gazes out on to the Atlantic Ocean with unobstructed views as far as the eye can see. This is the perfect setting to spend an afternoon drinking tea, eating cake and watching the sun go down with a loved one.

While waiting for the highly anticipated afternoon tea, my partner and I were presented with a tea menu comprised entirely of flavours from The Tregothnan Estate in Cornwall, one of the very best tea regions in the world. Choose from a colourful range of Earl Grey with Blue Flowers, Lemon Verbena, Red Berry infusion with Blackcurrant Leaves and the Tregothnan House Blend. If coffee is more your bag then Origins freshly ground Finca Los Altos cafetière coffee is also available.

Choosing to start with the savoury, my partner and I tucked into delicate square-cut sandwiches made to order. Fresh artisan bread encased red onion marmalade and cheddar cheese, egg and watercress, smoked salmon and tomato, cream cheese and rocket.

Next we reached for the scones and were delighted to find that they were still warm. While spreading with generous lashings of Cornish clotted cream and the Scarlet’s own Strawberry Jam, The Red Stuff (jam first, of course), my partner remarked, There’s nothing claggy about these scones!’. They were delightfully light with none of the heavy, stodginess that so often accompanies a disappointing scone.

The selection of eye-catching cakes included pistachio cake with blackcurrant jelly and griottine cherries, dark chocolate crémeux with Pedro Ximenez raisins and salted caramel macaroon and lemon posset with poached pear and ginger oatmeal. The deliciously sticky blackcurrant jelly was a delightful addition to its spongy pistachio-infused counterpart. The chocolate crémeux was as rich and deep in flavour as the lemon posset was light, zingy and fresh, and I am still dreaming about that salted caramel macaroon.

Each element of the afternoon tea was perfectly formed and presented, and there’s even the option to request more of what you run out of! Combining beauty and design both inside and out, afternoon tea at the Scarlet is an experience not to be missed. w

Afternoon tea, priced at £25 per person (with tea) or £35 per person (with champagne) must be booked 24 hours in advance.
