Charm in Charlestown.

Two of the oldest dwellings in this harbourside village have been renovated, and now make delightful self-catering holiday lets.

The unspoilt 18th-century harbourside village of Charlestown is the home port for many Square Sail Tall Ships still surviving in the working harbour today. The location is what draws film crews from around the world, with records showing it was first used in 1929 for a silent movie called Street of Abandoned Children. Most recently Matt Smith and the Dr Who team descended on the location to battle space pirates, and word locally is that the next film to be shot here will be a remake of Jason and the Argonauts.

Whether film crews are around or not, visitors continue to be drawn to this historic site. Seagull and Dolphin Cottage are two of the oldest dwellings in the village and much care has been taken to retain the charm and character of these two renovated, south-facing stone and slate Grade II Listed barns, available as self-catering holiday lets. The conversions are surrounded by landscaped gardens, allowing visitors to enjoy the glorious sea views from their lawn.

Patrick Wharton, owner of the properties, lives next door in the original red and brick stone farmhouse where, as a keen member of the Cornwall Beekeepers Association, he indulges his passion for beekeeping, Charlestown is a unique location he says. Were practically on the South West Coast Path and close to many beaches. From the garden you can enjoy the historic quayside and local fishermen deliver fresh scallops, lobster, crab and fish. Its an idyllic location.

These two popular two barn conversions both sleep six.Seagull Cottage is the smaller of the two and has a spacious living room, open to the apex of the roof, fitted with a comfortable leather seating area and natural wood flooring.Downstairs a twin bedded room has a patio door opening onto the landscaped lawn and gardens, and the master bedroom has a king size double bed. Upstairs there is an attractive snug area with casual seating ideal for reading, and a third bedroom with three, three ft single beds tucked under the eaves.

Dolphin Cottage meanwhile is built in a spacious L shape. On one side is the master bedroom, which is opposite a twin bedded room and delightful living room. The farmhouse style kitchen/diner has doors leading out to the grounds and a work bar divides it from the sitting area.An additional conservatory and large greenhouse adjoin the living room and provide extra space for dining and entertaining.
