The Tanyas Courage Trust was set up in memory of Cornish girl Tanya Billing to support young people in Cornwall, aged 16-25, with cancer

In August 2003 Tanya, aged 16 (pictured), was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. She began an intensive course of chemotherapy and went into remission in January 2004. Sadly, in August of the same year Tanya relapsed. She went through another two courses of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. However, she lost her courageous fight to this awful illness and passed away on 7 April 2005 aged just 17 years.
Throughout her suffering Tanya expressed a wish to help young people like her with cancer, so in August 2005 her family set up The Tanyas Courage Trust charity in memory of her. The Trusts objective is to aid young people from 16-25 years suffering from cancer, throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, by the provision of grants that can be used towards relieving their physical or financial needs.

The Trust helps emotionally and has brought many smiles to many faces when times are so hard and, for some, so short

It endeavours to support teenagers and young adult cancer sufferers and their families, but the hope is that as the charity grows, it can widen its range of beneficiaries. It has helped many young cancer patients by improving the spirit, life and wellbeing of all those attached to the Trust. With Tanyas Courage its more than just a charity that helps with money and gifts. It helps emotionally and has brought many smiles to many faces when times are so hard and, for some, so short. Cancer doesnt stop and nor do they, says Steph Roper, a Trust beneficiary.
I never thought that I would ever be able to get used to the fact that I was ill with two forms of cancer until I was introduced to The Tanyas Courage Trust. Without Tanyas Courage and what they did for me and what they still do, I wouldnt have got my confidence and will power to get through it all, says Natalie Edwards, another Trust beneficiary.
The amounts granted and the ages of the beneficiaries are reviewed annually and individually, and the Trust is funded entirely by donations and fundraising events organised by committee members. It holds many diverse events throughout the year such as fun days, music festivals, quiz nights and other entertainment, street collections and even supermarket bag packing.

The charity is always looking for new volunteers who can help with events. If you are interested or you would like to host an event, please contact Nikki, the Trust Manager, on 01726 852369. For more information about The Tanyas Courage Trust, visit: www.tanyascourage.org.uk.
