If you haven't heard of roller derby it is basically a fast paced sport played by women on quad skates. It hails from America but is starting to get a huge following in the UK with teams springing up all over the country.

WHATS IT ALL ABOUT?

Roller derby is a high energy, athletic, fast, full contact sport played on quad skates. Roller derby is played on a flat, oval track. Each team is made up of 4 blockers and 1 Jammer (points scorer) The aim of the game is for each team to help their own Jammer get through the pack as many times as possible while preventing the opposing team's Jammer scoring. A whole game is called a Bout and lasts for an hour and is made up of 2 minute jams. It's an exciting, modern, high-impact take on the original USA roller sport!
We play using the rules set from the WFTDA (Womens Flat Track Derby Association) which is the international governing body for the sport of womens flat track roller derby. As we become more established we hope to become affiliated to UKRDA which is the official UK roller derby association which provides support and guidance to its member leagues as well as furthering the sport of Roller Derby.
Derby is picking up pace with over 90 leagues now active across the UK and CRD is pro-active in getting our name and reputation out there to take on teams across the UK.
Our fans, like our league, are made up of all ages and include sports enthusiasts, the alternative crowd, relatives; in fact, were such a diverse bunch!!

OUR NUMBERS

As a fledging league, we still have some impressive stats. We have over 1000 Facebook fans; Our website cornwallrollerderby.com has recently gone live with similar sized teams to ours getting around 1000 hits per month & our first open bout was watched by over 350 paying Roller Derby fans.

WHO WE ARE

Cornwall Roller Derby was established in May 2010. One year later and the league consists of over 23 regular members as well as a recent influx of 12 fresh meat, our 2nd successful rookie intake in September 2011 and with 7 already expressing an interest in our February 2012 intake, its going to be a busy new year for CRD!
CRDs first team to be established, Atlantic Breakers, is the leagues travel team who will begin to compete against rival teams across the UK. In October 2011, Atlantic Breakers won their first open bout against South West rivals, Plymouth City Roller Girls by an awesome 161-89!
As with most Roller Derby leagues, Cornwall Roller Derby exists thanks to its skater owned attitude. Whether its fund-raising, coaching or designing leaflets and merchandise, its all achieved through the generosity of our members and volunteers time, all unpaid.
CRD's members are aged between 18 - 50's, with an average in their mid 20's & 30's. We have a vast array of life experience, skills and interests, weve got mums, tattoo artists, students and people doing regular 9-5 jobs in hospitality, schools and the NHS to name a few.
Roller derby is distinctive from other mainstream sports and here at Cornwall Roller Derby we bring Cornish originality mixed with a high level of athleticism to our game and with player names like Bloody Nora, Pinta Doom & Madame Warfare to name a few, a lot of our players choose to take on alter ego names to make Derby even more colourful than our turquoise and gold team colours!
Our activities are year round and CRD aim to participate in public appearances, charitable activities, and other promotional events to promote our team and to raise much needed funds which will support this awesome sport to continue in Cornwall. Recent examples include entering for the Crantock Bale push, Cornwalls Alternative Calendar Girls, contributing to Aftersun, a whole afternoon and evening of live music and creative stalls selling merchandise. We are also signed up to Art8 and the Newquay Alternative Christmas fair.

CRD is looking forward to welcoming Rookies to our sessions & introducing them to the addictive world of Roller Derby on February 27th in Newquay!! Also in the new year we will be introducing new sessions into new areas of Cornwall & pitting our Atlantic Breakers Team against Cardiff Roller Collective at an away bout on March 3rd.
