A 15-year dream to design football kits is coming true for twin brothers, Samuel and Thomas Phillips, both on the Performance Sportswear Design course at University College Falmouth.

As a result of a second year degree project last autumn, Samuel and Thomas have designed and constructed home and away model kits for their local football team, Perranwell AFC. Their aim is to manufacture the kits in time for the new season in August of this year.

The new designs are influenced by the history of the club and its previous kits. Thomas explained, We have done a lot of research and even explored the clubhouse loft to discover a whole range of previous shirts, some going back three decades. And as players for the club ourselves we have spoken to many fans and the teams about what is important to them in relation to the shirts and the colour blue is a key identifying factor.

The twins are reluctant to give away too much information at this stage, stating, new home and away kits and exclusive pictures will be revealed at the start of the new season.

From the age of five the twins would colour in football players in colouring books. This was the start of their passion for kits and they would spend many hours colouring in templates. Samuel recalls, We have fond memories of taking football kit templates on holiday with us. We would be told by our parents to stop drawing and look out of the window whilst driving through stunning views of Europe but we didnt want to, we were designing football kits!

As young children, they sent some of their drawings to the international football shirt manufacturers Umbro who replied with a supportive letter. On reflection Samuel said, Little did they know how important that reply would be in encouraging us to realise our dream. Thomas added, We aspire to become the new Humphrey Brothers who set up Umbro in the 1920s.

The twins ambition to design and manufacture football shirts doesnt stop there, however. They aim to create a wide range of sportswear and have already worked on projects for skiwear and clothing for yoga with influential names including Adidas and Polartec. They are currently putting together the finishing touches to a Polartec sponsored Ski Cross outfit to be worn by Great Britains number one Ski Cross athlete, Peter Whelen. What we like to do is take the brief set by the course and try and make it as real as possible, said Samuel. It was great to work with Polartec and for Peter Whelen to be racing in the suit in the near future will be amazing.
