Bude is fast becoming a centre of all things tasty - and coffee makers Sabins Artisan Roasters are a new kid on the block

“Our aim is to simply import arabica, fairtrade and organic beans and let each bean be roasted by hand to allow the beautiful complexity to come through,” says Emma Sabin, owner of her burgeoning coffee roasting empire.

She has only recently started Sabins, roasting and importing beans from a converted shed in the garden of her family home.

“I am an incomer or an emit in this area but like many with a young family and a Philip Seymour's book of self sufficiency we felt invincible and drunk by endless beaches and blue sky,” she admits. “We bought a run own barn with a little land and then lost it a bit not really understanding the economy and the pros of a regular income but oddly that is great wake up call.”

With a background on restaurant and hospitality trade and recognised the importance of great coffee, and they became interested in the raw product and how to avoid the homogenised nature of all coffee. “What we have discovered is the beans, like wine, are so diverse and have so many different flavour notes.”

So confident are they in the fabulous flavours of their roasts, they are running a no-sugar campaign so as not to ruin the lovely sweet finish.
