One of Cornwall’s most dynamic farming businesses has hit the spotlight again recently with two more major awards. St Ewe Free Range Eggs, based between Truro and St Austell, has received national recognition for its branding work against stiff competition in this year’s industry-standard Pig and Poultry Marketing Awards and also received the prestigious local accolade of Best Family Business in the Cornwall Business Awards.

Speaking of her delight at receiving both these awards within a week, Rebecca Tonks, who runs the egg producing and packing business with her parents Richard and Christine Tonks, said, “We are over the moon with this level of recognition, and particularly because it reflects two of the things we are most passionate about - keeping pace with the demands of the 21st century customer while retaining our fundamental belief in family values. Even as we extend into new markets, taking our Westcountry farm produce to households and restaurants in London and across the UK, this remains at the heart of all our developments.”

The branding award recognised the way in which the business has re-examined all its marketing materials and created one cohesive brand identity under which its ever-increasing range of products sits. Determined to prove wrong the old adage an egg is an egg’, the Tonks family has developed a number of different speciality eggs for specific uses, alongside the ever-popular Original’ lines in their recognisable blue boxes.

The farm’s ground-breaking Boost the Roost’ nutrient-rich egg has recently been improved to include enhanced levels of both natural DHA omega-3 and selenium (a first in the UK), while the brand new Rick Yolk line has been designed specifically with home-bakers, pasta-makers and chefs in mind. Every St Ewe egg is laid by hens that are raised to extremely high standards of welfare, ranging freely on the family farm and on other selected local family farms, and fed a 100% natural diet.

St Ewe free range eggs are available from a range of outlets, including Tesco and Asda. The Great Cornish Food Store, opening alongside Waitrose in Truro on 16th June, will be the first retail outlet to stock the entire range – including the extra large Grand’ line and the mixed weight Hen Picked’ value line.
