Fancy a good Thyme? Or even a fabulous Fennel or a special Sage? Then, come along to the 7th annual Herb Festival at Bodmin Plant & Herb Nursery which aims to give herbs the focus they deserve by celebrating their growing and usage.


Fancy a good Thyme? or even a fabulous Fennel or a special Sage? Then, come along to the 7th annual Herb Festival at Bodmin Plant & Herb Nursery which aims to give herbs the focus they deserve by celebrating their growing and usage.

The event, held over the weekend of Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th April, 2011 runs across the 5 acre Nursery just outside of Bodmin and is a free event. Not only will there be various herb related displays, but various local enthusiasts join in to present or sample either their herb knowledge or their herby goods.

Enjoying herbs in food is a big part of the Festival, with the following being featured:

  • A Herb & Salad Bar: ideas for grow-your-own herb and leaf salad across the year, be your space an allotment or a simple pot or grow-bag. Delicious leaves being sampled include Wild Rocket, Salad Rocket, Corn Salad, Miners Lettuce, plus delicious leaf mixes with Oriental favourites such as Mizuna and Pak Choi.

  • Food Sampling: Chef Cheryl Bouchier periodically samples delicious nibbles of home-made recipes featuring herbs, together with recipes to take away and try at home. Dishes this year will include Peppermint Truffles, Leek and Mixed Herb Soup and mini Pork & Sage Burgers.

  • Joint Grow-it, Cook-it demonstrations by Cheryl and one of the Nursery Team, featuring growing tips whilst recipes are prepared.

  • Herbs for Shadier Spots many assume you always need a sun-drenched spots for herbs, but there is much you can do if your designated herb garden is somewhat shadier.

  • Herbs in sweet-making: a display giving history and ideas featuring Liquorice, Marshmallow, Peppermint, Angelica, Lavender and Roses.

  • Local specialist producers incorporating herbs into their food:

  • Bodmin Moor sausage-makers Stokely Farm Produce will be sampling a Herb Sausage as part of its range of quality pork and pork products.

  • Bude-based Sargies Cornish Kitchen will be selling fresh foods including delicious hand-made Herb Breads and Rosemary Baked Cheesecakes.

  • Seasonal jam, jelly & chutney-maker Laura Taylor will present her tasty and inventive range of herb jellies such as Rosemary Jelly and Strawberry & Oregano Jelly, as well a Moutarde aux fines herbes (herb mustard). Proceeds go to support the RNLI.

  • Festival new-comer Chocolicious from St Wenn, will feature their range of hand-made truffles and chocolates, blending herbs such as Lavender with their chocolates.

  • The Duchy Smoked Fish Company from Charlestown will present their range of hot and cold smoked produce including meats, garlic, salt and feature herbs.

  • Bodmin-based Mount Folly Whole & Cornish Foods with their array of sauces, relishes and herbs and spices.

There will be an opportunity for children to learn more with a prize Herb Quiz. Also, children under 12 can pot up a sunflower for free and enter a competition to grow the tallest sunflower by the end of the summer.

Other exhibitors will include a Herbalist, Aromatherapist, a natural dyeing and weaving expert, a soap-maker, various natural skincare producers and a local book-shop featuring herb and gardening titles. Last but not least, there will be a large Charity Tea Tent with herb teas as well as the conventional sort, alongside delicious home-made cakes and savouries.

Bodmin Plant & Herb Nursery extends to 5 acres of plants, specialising in Herbs and Herbaceous Perennials. It also has extensive ranges of vegetables, hardy geraniums, shrubs, climbers, fruit & ornamental trees, marginal plants and seasonal ranges.

Bodmin Plant & Herb Nursery is located half way between Bodmin and Lanivet on the A389. The Nursery is open 9am 6pm Mondays Saturdays and from 10am 4pm on Sundays. Entry to the Herb Festival is free.
