Great news for young singers in Cornwall: National Youth Choirs of Great Britain auditions in Truro - Sunday 4 November, Truro School

Cornwall is rich in musical activity for young people, with a fantastic range of activities for young singers across the county. On Sunday 4 November, the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (NYCGB) is holding auditions in Truro so that young people in Cornwall have a chance to gain even more singing experience and fly the flag for Cornwall on the national stage.NYCGB offers the best young singers from across Great Britain exceptional performance experiences and vocal tuition on intensive residential courses held during school Easter and summer holidays. Most members return year after year, often progressing through the choirs from school year 6 (year 5 for boy trebles) up to age 22.In 2013 the NYCGB celebrates its 30th anniversary with a performance of Monteverdis Vespers by all the choirs in the Royal Albert Hall at Easter, and a full programme of activities during the summer holidays.Theres no financial barrier to joining, as bursaries are available to cover any kind of cost for those who need it from audition fee, travel expenses, and costs for courses including uniform, right up to full course costs.

To audition in Truro on 4 November, singers need to complete an application form and send it to the NYCGB main office by Thursday 1 November. More information and the application form are at

Angela Renshaw, Musical Director of Cornwall Boys Choir, Cornwall Junior Choir and Cambiata says, This is an opportunity for Cornwalls young singers to audition for the first time on Cornish soil. The NYCGB work with some of the finest young singers from across the whole country. The standard of their performances is simply awe inspiring. This is really an opportunity not to be missed! I would urge any young singers in Cornwall who have aspirations of singing in a world class choir to apply for audition.
We're very excited about recruiting some new members from the south west, says NYCGB Director Ben Parry. Were impressed by the fantastic range of singing activity in Cornwall. The year-round support from excellent and dedicated teachers and conductors here means that young people from Cornwall have a great background to take their singing to the next stage.

National Youth Choirs of Great Britain

  • The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, set up 30 years ago as a single choir of 100 of the best young singers in the nation, now provides the widest of musical experiences for over 850 young people aged 9-28

  • We are a youth organisation where outreach, education and excellence are placed at the centre of our creative focus

  • We aim to develop performance skills at the highest level, challenging young singers to embrace a vast repertoire and to develop a flexible and creative approach to musical performance

  • No member is excluded from the choirs for financial reasons. A generous bursary scheme is open to all members via application to help with any level of financial support for fees and travel costs. Information about the scheme is clearly detailed on our application forms.

  • We nurture talented young people by providing a progressive structure for musical and vocal development: the Girls Choir, Boys Choir and Cambiata Voices, for ages 9-14; Training Choirs North and South for ages 13-18; the National Youth Choir for ages 16-22, and Laudibus, our chamber choir for ages 22-28 considering a professional singing career

  • On our residential courses, our young singers take part in intensive rehearsals covering music from the earliest classical eras to contemporary music in a range of genres, supported by individual voice coaching, alexander technique and lessons in musicianship

  • Collaborative partnerships enable us to explore more diverse areas of musical activity. In recent years, we have collaborated with Will Lang and folk musicians on Tyneside, the National Youth Jazz Collective, SAMYO, and Living Rhythms
