Trelawney in Cornwall's Wadebridge hosts annual Onion Show in September

The North Cornwall Onion Show takes place 28 September for the fourth year running at Trelawney@Wadebridge in Sladesbridge near Wadebridge from 10am until 4pm.

Wayne Plant, Committee Member for the North Cornwall Onion Show, said: “It is thought the show started after World War II and has grown ever since.

“There are 14 categories and people just have to pay 20p per entry. There are sections for other vegetables including shallots, pickled onions, pumpkins, marrows and leeks. Each winner in each class will receive a cup and a cup will also be presented to the winner of the most classes.

“Both the public and the exhibitors can gain access to the show area when Trelawney@Wadebridge garden centre opens at 10am. The exhibitors just have to turn up on the day to enter the show and there are no entry forms to fill in.”

The exhibitors will be given two hours to stage their exhibits and then the area is cordoned off while judging takes place at 12noon. The awards will be presented at 3.30pm.

Peter Burks, General Manager of the garden centre, added: “The North Cornwall Onion Show committee is dedicated to maintaining and improving this local horticultural show and we are delighted we could help them by being the venue for another year. We are looking forward to many more shows here at the garden centre.”

One of Cornwall’s largest and leading independent garden centres, Trelawney@Wadebridge was originally launched in 1970 as a nursery by Frank and Marion Danning. The garden centre is now run by their son David and David Symons, who started working for the family at the age of 11.

The garden centre provides customers with a wide range of quality gardening products including plants, furniture, barbecues, gifts and food items. Its friendly and knowledgeable staff are on-hand to give visitors help and advice on all gardening matters. There is also a garden building and Elite Spa concession on-site.

Carriages Restaurant, which seats up to 240 customers, is situated next to the lake at Trelawney@Wadebridge. It serves hot and cold drinks, snacks, cakes, breakfasts, lunches, a daily carvery and children’s meals.

The award-winning, family-run business includes two generations of the Danning and Symons families. More than eight years ago the company launched a sister garden centre in North Devon, Trelawney@Ashford and is opening its third garden centre Trelawney@Probus on a green-field site in Cornwall next year (2015).

Trelawney@Probus looks set to offer visitors a chance to see plants and products in action with garden areas on-site showing how things grow and work.

The North Cornwall Onion Show will take place at Trelawney@Wadebridge on Sunday, September 28 from 10am until 4pm.
